Historical itinerary: exploring the western lands of the Serra de Montsant

Embark on a fascinating itinerary through the lands to the west of the Serra de Montsant, recently transformed by human activity. This hike offers a unique experience for hikers in search of historical and cultural discoveries in the heart of an unspoilt natural environment.
The ascent follows the old path linking La Bisbal de Falset to Cabacés, which has been transformed into a track in many places. Extend your route to the top of the massif for aerial views and to get closer to the summit of Montsant. The descent through the Barranc dels Colls Baixos offers another opportunity to witness the symbiosis of human activity and nature in exceptional landscapes.

Suitable for all levels of hiker, this route is clearly signposted with Turisme de Catalunya wooden panels at the beginning and end. Accessible all year round, it is advisable to avoid hot weather, as the route crosses cultivated fields, some of which are abandoned. Be sure to bring enough water for a comfortable experience. Immerse yourself in the history, culture and natural beauty of the region.

At home after the pool: a journey through time and nature

Your adventure begins at the swimming pool, which offers leisure facilities and parking for visitors. Cross the bridge over the river and follow an ancient stone path that rises before you. The route continues on a track between cultivated fields towards El Montsant, along Coll de Manxa, as indicated on the sign.
To stay on the right-hand path, follow the white markings at the various crossroads, turning right at the first crossroads, then left at the next two. Leave the path on the right at the sharp bend where there is a small stone house with a cistern.
Continue on the ascending path through woods until you reach fields, where a path on the right guides you through abandoned egg-laying areas. The white markers will guide you to the old stone path, which you follow to the right. Climb up to Coll de Manxa through an area of burnt vegetation. After a retreat, return to Coll Baix.

At this point, you can choose to descend to the left or extend your walk. To complete the route, climb up the other side of the pass to a slab of bare rock. Follow the ridge path to the left through the Serrall de les Roques, through the forest to the highest part of the Barranc Tancat. Descend to the right along the old road from Margalef to Cabacès, where you can visit the Cova dels Casaments and the Cova de La Palla.
To return to Coll Baix, turn right on the path that crosses the ravine and continue just after the fork. Return to the crop fields, take care and turn right on a path that climbs up to the hill. From Coll Baix, start the descent by taking the path on the right. The way back is easy, following the Barranc dels Colls Baixos, eventually becoming a track that leads you to the Montsant river. Signposts will guide you if in doubt. When you reach the river, choose to return to town by crossing the riverbed and passing by the soccer pitch, or follow the path along the river to the left as far as the swimming pool bridge.
